Makeup Trends That Are Summertime Fine and Brown Skin Friendly

Before nearly the entire world was hit by a global pandemic, in which we continue to witness a historic and global uprising in the continuing pursuit of social and racial justice, the makeup of summer had a different meaning for me. My summer beauty looks were meant for creative expression, having a drink on the terraces, attending local events, and spending time with friends on hot sticky nights. As my city slowly opens up and conversations about dismantling systems of oppression continue, summer makeup is more to me than it ever was. This summer, makeup is a way to take care of yourself and a relentless and powerful affirmation of black joy.

While taking a break from the often mentally and emotionally draining news cycle, I researched some of the warm-weather appropriate makeup styles you could wear this season. Read on to see the five trends that will be in my beauty rotation as I cultivate all the happiness this summer.

1: watercolor eyes

KHERA ALEXANDRE

Inspiration: As temperatures rise, we may want to experiment with color. Try creating an eyeshadow look that uses unconventional color combinations. Seen on influencers and SS20 runway models like Christian Siriano, Balmain, and Oscar de la Renta, bright colors and the summer season go hand-in-hand. From pastels to neon lights, the colors in this trend are vibrant and boundless.

The Look: After applying Anastasia Eye Foundation ($ 13), I applied the "Supreme" shade to the center of my eyelid and down to the browbone of the Anastasia Beverly Hills Jackie Aina Palette ($ 32). Then, using the same palette, I used smaller brushes to add "Shookington" to my inner and outer corners, and "Wiggalese" to my eyes. In addition to the Jackie Aina Palette, brands like UOMA Beauty and Juvia’s Place offer a number of palettes that stand out on brown skin and are great for color matching. Let the images of this multicolored dream field inspire you and have fun seeing what you have to offer.

2: float

The Inspiration: Floating eyeliner is pretty much everywhere and for good reason - this style highlights the eyes and looks like a minimalist work of art. Seen not only on shows like Chromat, Emilio Pucci, and Anna Sui, but also on influencers and celebrities, I couldn't wait to try this look. Aside from making sure the product of your choice is pigmented enough for easy, flawless execution, this trend has no rules.

The Appearance - A reliable liquid gel or eyeliner will also help you draw your shape accurately. Since I'm a fan of gel liner, I opted for MAC Cosmetic's Chromalin Gel in "Black Black" ($ 22). If cream eyeliners are more your speed, Danessa Myricks Beauty's Vision Cream Eyeliners ($ 15) come in 12 stunning shades that can be worn on your face and body. You can take a gentler approach by placing a little floating line, or you can go the abstract route and play with unique shapes and colors.

3: daring wings

The Inspiration: For Summer 2020, the classic winged eyeliner takes on a fearless twist. From Jeremy Scott's over-the-top lining to Helmut Lang's vivid pinks and yellows and Valentino's glittery gold wings, the SS20 runway liner was a vibe in its own right. They came in a variety of insignias, sizes, and had a lot of attitude. Gels, liquid eyeliners, and eyeshadows are options for products that can be used when creating this look.

The Look: I recommend wearing NYX's eyeliner line. Whether you like gel, pencil, or liquid eyeliner, NYX pigments are vibrant, can be laid on top of other products, and are amazingly priced. For my take on this trend, I used NYX's Jumbo Eyeliner in 'Milk' ($ 5) and wrapped Colourpop's eyeshadow in 'Sweet Spot' from their 'Uh-Huh Honey' palette ($ 12) at the top. I kept the rest of my face fairly smooth by subtly defining my other features and warming my skin with blush and bronzer.

4: the tanned heroine

Inspiration: Nothing is easier than tanned skin. Missoni, Etro and Elie Tahari sent models onto the runway with tanned skin and soft, barely visible makeup.
